REVIEW + FREE DL: Michelle Cade’s Kindisch Podcast leaves us feeling intoxicated :)

It’s Monday, the weekend was a blur and I’m back at work staring at a busy week ahead. This is the afternoon slump, the one which happens after lunch but way before the end of the day. I sit back in my chair, put on my headphones, settle down and press play on Michelle latest mix. A podcast for Berlin based label Kindisch, launched by the minds responsible for Get Physical. This label is very particular about who they work with, which is a sign it’s worth looking out for her in the future. Michelle has just returned from playing at their last party in Berlin and put this mix together before she flew out. Signed to Kindisch and Secret Music, her recent remix of “Gone” (Original also by Michelle) touched the top 50 in the Beatport Electronica / Downtempo chart and we have insider knowledge Michelle is now working on a string of tracks off the back of this success.

I instantly hear why Kindisch have taken an interest in Michelle’s music, from the beginning the percussion is at the forefront, accompanied by an ebb and flow which seems so natural. This mix sounds like it was created by someone who finds it easy to tap into the spiritual and emotional side of electronic music. I certainly felt the tribal call which many producers and DJ’s find hard to replicate. Expressing what she feels, whilst taking you on an emotional journey of beats and percussion set in an ambient soundscape . Put bluntly, if you wanted to venture into the woods and take mushrooms all weekend then this mix is exactly what you would want to hear.

You can listen to the mix below. Please support this talented artist by liking, following and sharing. Oh! We almost forgot to mention the bit where you get something for free. Michelle has given us a link to a free download of her “California Dreaming” remake which represents her style perfectly. If you are a DJ then add this one to your bag.

“Please Sir, I Want Some More!” Galaxiid leaves the punters feeling a little empty…

Event Review for Nina Kraviz pres. Galaxiid

By Anonymau5

Having witnessed Nina Kraviz this summer at first hand, supporting Carl Cox at his closing parties in Space Ibiza (and in the process immediately falling head-over-heels for the supremely talented and oh-so-photogenic techno queen), this reviewer was more than looking forward to the debut of her own club event, Galaxiid, the penultimate weekend in March. Taking place at the capital’s new techno mecca (the imposing Printworks in London’s Surrey Quays), the event had been well hyped for some time and the line-up featured 808 State (they of Pacific State fame) and Nina Kraviz’ own paramour Bjarki in support, among others. Quite the formidable line-up, or so it seemed.

So we tumbled out of bed (still nursing our hangovers from the previous night’s endeavours) and descended in our droves on an unseasonably warm Saturday afternoon with the wind in our sails and more than a little Dutch courage to fuel us. Round 2, here we go. And then, some 8 hours later, we left en masse again (after what on paper could and should have been a rip-roaring-chandelier-swinging type of affair) feeling a little bit… underwhelmed. Could it be? My argument is threefold:

  1. Firstly (and I have to get this off my chest):- 808 State were atrocious, clearly the victims of their own success. There, I said it. And no I’m not going to pander to them just because of that song, or because they deserve respect for what they did, in the past. To me they’re like a dance music Chesney Hawkes… You couldn’t give a flying fuck about the “back catalogue” and their “experimental” live show (discordant acid-heavy crap). Instead you find yourself there for 60 minutes, shouting at them: “PLAY THE TUNE. PLAY THE FUCKING TUNE. SOD ALL THE REST AND PLAY THE FUCKING TUNE!!!!!” Sadly it felt like the life had been sucked out of the dancefloor (the queue for drinks tokens multiplied significantly during the hour); and unfortunately Nina was left really up against it to try and bring the energy back…
  2. Speaking of, the headliner herself only played a 90 minute set. What? Fair play for the anti-hubris (many a vainglorious promoter have put themselves front-and-centre at their own events, moronically touting themselves as “world famous” when propped up by a far worthier undercard) but techno, of all genres, surely lends itself best to long builds, even longer sets, journeys so to speak…? Compared to her 3-hour epic in Ibiza, 90 minutes felt like a microwave dinner, with all the associated richness of the summer’s more satisfying and flavourful smorgasbord shoehorned rather ham-fistedly into what amounted to nothing more than a “special guest appearance”. One thing is leaving them wanting more; it’s another thing entirely to leave them starving.
  • Finally, delicacy. Nina’s set itself was far too subtle and delicate. When compared to Adam Beyer’s 8-hour tour de force a month previous, the foray into breaks and minimal tech felt too clever, too indulgent; too safe If you’re going to restrict your appearance to only 90 minutes then by God use those 90 minutes to strip the skin off our eyelids. More bosh next time Nina, please.

Okay okay, so the thing is… I’m being picky, admittedly. Yes it is easy to rant and rave high up in my ivory tower; and everyone is a critic these days... After all, it’s not going to stop me following Nina religiously, gazing upon her with near puppy-like devotion. I’ll still be keeping an eye out for those back-to-the-Hacienda type events (a sprinkling of nostalgia can be quite good fun from time-to-time)… Why, I’ll even vouch for Pacific State. It was and still is a seminal tune. I guess what I’m saying is; the event left me feeling just a little bit empty, a little bit flat. Like some techno Oliver, I can hear myself beseeching the organizers: “Please sir, I want some more!”

With all that in mind, one pleasant surprise from the night did come in the form of Bjarki, who destroyed any preconception of nepotism by closing the event with 90 minutes of eclectic wizardry that ranged from a groovy 130 beats-per-minute way up to 180BPM+ (!) (touching nose-bleedingly-hardcore territory in the process) as he closed the event with aplomb. Such command of the musical spectrum, and knowledge of such a vast breadth of material, can only be commended. Well done Bjarki.

Printworks too, was ever impressive: – as a venue it is in parts a harrowing vision of a dystopia, where the last embers of humankind stomp away mindlessly to futuristic techno beats in the long-deceased foundries of human civilisation (–cap doffed to the Matrix & Blade Runner for the imagery). Indeed, I look forward to seeing the likes of Maceo Plex bring his trademark cinematic style here in the future, or perhaps the more brutalist sound of Recondite might fill the ex-printing press with some suitably dark and ominous tones (–I owe Forgetting Sarah Marshall for that one). Either sound would be ideally wedded to the setting. All I ask, meanwhile, is that the next time the Galaxiid wagon rolls into town, Nina might credit herself a little more and treat us all to an 8-hour techno marathon of her own. Now that would be a spectacle worth getting out of bed for.

BYBL Records Interview with Artikal (Abode)

Tomorrow we party! Cafe 1001’s main room boasts a Function 1 sound system and our line up will certainly enjoy testing it. With one day to go we caught up with our Headliner to ask a few cheeky questions before he shows us why he is currently enjoying a string of bookings from London to Ibiza. Here’s what Artikal AKA Stefano Ardani had to say…Be sure to check out his latest mix at the bottom of the page on Rinse FM.

1) How were you influenced by music growing up?

Music was everywhere when I was a kid, I was influenced by rave music at the age of 11 from hearing a pals older brothers mixtape from Dance Planet and have been hooked ever since
2) What tune have you always wanted to remix?

I would love to remix an old disco track called ‘Supernature’ by Cerrone. Its such and important track to dance music

3) What have you got in the pipeline at the moment?
I have some nice parties and festivals coming up all across the UK and Ibiza. Im really looking forward to playing at Chapter, which is at Rainbow Venues and ABODE has its own festival in September. That will be a game changer.

4) If you could go back to back with any DJ in history who would it be and why?
It would have to be MR C. For me, he is one of the best house and techno selectors around and he creates magical journeys during his sets. A true master.

5) Where can people hear your stuff?
My latest mix pays homage to the London’s after hours minimal scene and all my other mixes are on my Soundcloud Artikal (Ldn)

See you tomorrow. If you like what you hear, follow Artikal and share his work here:

You Little Tease! J_Hazzrd Drops a Tasty Mix

So here we are, 4 sleeps to go and it’s time to show off our line-up. We asked a few of our guest DJ’s to put together a little mix to act as teasers in the run up to our next event at Café 1001 on Friday 24th March.

First up we have Jorge Martins AKA J_Hazzrd who has provided us with 1 whole night condensed into an hour. This promotes the way we like our nights to go, starting off with some bumpy House grooves to get you in the mood, then moving towards Tech House and getting darker at the end of the night. Its a crescendo we love, and we think you will too.

Jorge continues to take inspiration from 90’s electronic music and is a Detroit fanatic. He is an enthusiastic DJ who we are happy to have signed to BYBL, come and see what he has in store for us on Friday 24th at Café 1001.

If you like what you hear then share it with your friends and support Jorge’s music by following him online:

Konstantinos Skopelitis – Painting a Story

This week I want to shine the spotlight on a very talented artist who kindly let us use his artwork on the flyer for our next event. Konstantinos Skopelitis, based in Greece he came to our attention by following the BYBL page on Twitter. His art instantly struck a chord in me, portraits with a different edge. Many have a distinctive newspaper print or text from books in the background and most are of beautiful women caught in a moment. His art wants to tell a story and the more I look at a piece the more my mind wants to unravel the story behind it. It’s as if he is trying explain the reason for the expression without words whilst reminding us that we all have our own story to tell.

The one which features in our is artwork is called ‘Crystal’ and unlike many of the other pieces this one is in colour painted with Acrylic. Konstantinos’s work is fairly priced and affordable so feel free to browse via the links below before someone else claims these one of a kind portraits.

Words from Konstantinos about his passion…

“I remember myself holding a pencil and drawing since I was a child. Drawing whatever triggered my wild imagination. Years went by and my pencil became a brush, a charcoal, a pen. The paper turned to a canvas and painting became a self-discovery journey. I relied on colours to express my feelings, my thoughts, my experiences. My pencil was my closest ally, always there to speak for me when the words couldn’t. Faces, scenes from photos, a song I love, a place I visited, an old dusty book, vintage items, through my pop-art interpretation.
My inspiration is hidden and found everywhere in life. My technique can cover mixed media from acrylic, ink, oil, collage among others. Every inspiration is a new journey. Every journey is a new challenge; a challenge I am always willing to take up.”
